Product Overview

Ferro Silico (Ferro Silicon) is an essential lump alloy composed of iron and silicon. Produced through the carbothermic reduction in submerged arc furnaces, our Ferro Silico is characterized by its high silicon content and precise metallurgical structure. It serves as the primary workhorse for deoxidation and alloying in the steel and iron foundry industries.

As a strong carbide forming element inhibitor, Silicon improves the elasticity and magnetic permeability of steel while ensuring a clean, porous structure free of harmful oxides.

Key Benefits & Advantages

Efficient Deoxidation: Forms stable silicon dioxide (SiO₂), removing dissolved oxygen from molten steel to prevent blowholes and improve ingot structure.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties: Increases the hardness, elasticity, and tensile strength of spring steels and transformer steels.

Graphitization Aid: In cast iron production, it promotes the formation of graphite, improving machinability and wear resistance.

Consistent Lumpy Size: Customizable sizing ensures rapid dissolution and minimal dust generation during charging.

High Purity: Low levels of harmful trace elements (Al, S, P, C) ensure no contamination of the final melt.

Case Study: Improving Yield in Bearing Steel Production

Background

Client: A major European special steel manufacturer
Product: Bearing steel (100Cr6)
Challenge: The client was experiencing inconsistent deoxidation results using standard aluminum-based deoxidizers, leading to the formation of hard alumina inclusions. These inclusions negatively impacted the bearing lifespan and resulted in high rejection rates during ultrasonic testing.

Solution Provided

Our technical team proposed switching to a two-stage deoxidation process utilizing our high-purity Ferro Silico (FeSi 75%).

Stage 1: A small aluminum addition was used for preliminary deoxidation in the EAF.

Stage 2: Our FeSi 75% (Low Al grade) was added during tapping into the ladle.

Implementation

The Ferro Silico lumps (10-50mm) were added to the molten steel stream during the tapping process. The high silicon content rapidly diffused through the melt, reacting with remaining oxygen to form liquid calcium-silicate inclusions rather than solid alumina clusters.

Results

After implementing our Ferro Silico solution, the client achieved measurable improvements within the first month of production:

Parameter Before (Al Only) After (With FeSi) Improvement
Oxygen Content (ppm) 25 - 30 ppm 12 - 15 ppm ↓ 50%
Inclusion Cleanliness (K4) 8.5 3.2 ISO Standard Met
Rejection Rate 4.5% < 1% ↓ 78%
Yield per Heat 91% 94% ↑ 3%
