Descrption
Ferro Silicon Magnesium is an essential nodularizer and inoculant alloy specifically designed for the production of ductile iron (also known as spheroidal graphite iron). It typically contains 5–10% magnesium, 45–50% silicon, and controlled amounts of calcium, rare earth elements (such as cerium and lanthanum), and other trace elements. The primary function of Ferro Silicon Magnesium is to convert the graphite structure from undesirable flakes into spherical nodules, thereby imparting exceptional strength, ductility, and impact resistance to the final casting.
During the nodularization process, Ferro Silicon Magnesium is added to molten iron using methods such as the sandwich, tundish cover, or wire injection. The magnesium reacts vigorously with sulfur and oxygen to form magnesium sulfide and magnesium oxide, creating the conditions necessary for nodular graphite precipitation. However, this reaction also produces dense white fumes and causes rapid fading of inoculation effect. For this reason, Ferro Silicon Magnesium is often used in combination with a post-inoculant, such as Ferro Silicon Barium, to restore nucleation sites and extend fading resistance.

Application of Silicon Magnesium
1. Ductile Iron Nodularization
Ferro Silicon Magnesium is primarily used as a nodularizer in ductile iron production. When added to molten iron, the magnesium content reacts with sulfur and oxygen to form magnesium sulfide and magnesium oxide, enabling graphite to precipitate as spheroids rather than flakes. This produces ductile iron with excellent strength, ductility, and impact resistance for automotive and machinery components.
2. Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) Production
Ferro Silicon Magnesium is essential for producing compacted graphite iron, a material with properties between gray and ductile iron. Controlled magnesium additions create vermicular (compacted) graphite shapes that offer superior thermal conductivity and fatigue resistance. CGI is widely used for diesel engine blocks, cylinder heads, and exhaust manifolds.
3. Heavy-Section Ductile Iron Castings
For large ductile iron castings such as wind turbine hubs, valve bodies, and heavy machinery frames, Ferro Silicon Magnesium ensures consistent nodularization throughout thick sections. Its fading-resistant formulation maintains nodule formation even during extended pour times, preventing flake graphite formation in slow-cooling areas and ensuring uniform mechanical properties.
4. Post-Inoculation After Magnesium Treatment
Following primary nodularization with Ferro Silicon Magnesium, foundries often add small amounts of this product as a post-inoculant. This practice restores nucleation sites destroyed during the violent magnesium reaction, increases nodule counts, reduces carbide formation, and improves machinability of final ductile iron castings across all section thicknesses.
