Product Introduction

1. Product Overview

Ferro Silicon Barium (FeSiBa) is a composite alloy primarily composed of silicon (Si), barium (Ba), and iron (Fe). It is widely used in the steelmaking and foundry industries as an effective inoculant and modifier. Its unique combination of elements provides superior deoxidation, desulfurization, and nucleation capabilities compared to traditional ferroalloys.

2. Key Properties

Property Description
Chemical Composition Si: 60–70%, Ba: 2–6%, Fe: balance, with low Al and Ca content
Physical Form Lumps, granules, or powder (customizable)
Melting Point Approx. 1,200–1,300°C
Density 3.5–4.2 g/cm³
Grain Size 0.2–10 mm (for inoculation); 10–50 mm (for ladle addition)

3. Main Functions & Advantages

Strong Deoxidation
Barium has a high affinity for oxygen, effectively reducing oxide inclusions and improving steel cleanliness.

Desulfurization Effect
Ba reacts with sulfur to form stable sulfides, reducing sulfur content in molten iron.

Excellent Inoculation Performance
Promotes the formation of Type A graphite in cast iron, reducing chill and improving machinability.

Prolonged Fading Resistance
Compared to calcium-based inoculants, FeSiBa provides a longer lasting effect (up to 10–15 minutes), allowing more time for casting.

Reduces White Cast Iron Tendency
Prevents carbide formation, especially in thin-walled castings.

Steelmaking for advanced high-strength steels

Production of wear-resistant and heat-resistant castings

Case Study: Improving Nodularity in Ductile Iron Castings

Background

A mid-sized foundry in Germany producing heavy-duty ductile iron valve bodies faced a recurring problem: inconsistent nodularity (65–75%) and high chill depth (2.5–3.0 mm) in 20 mm thick sections. They had been using a standard FeSi75 inoculant with 1% Ca.

Solution Implemented

The foundry replaced 50% of their conventional inoculant with Ferro Silicon Barium (FeSiBa: Si 65%, Ba 4.5%, Ca <0.5%) at a ladle addition rate of 0.4% of melt weight. No other process changes were made.

Results (based on 30 consecutive heats)

Parameter Before (FeSi75) After (FeSiBa) Improvement
Nodularity (%) 68 ± 5% 88 ± 2% +20%
Chill depth (mm) 2.8 ± 0.3 0.9 ± 0.2 -68%
Ferrite/pearlite ratio 40/60 65/35 More ferrite → better ductility
Tensile strength (MPa) 410 485 +18%
Fading time (min) 6–8 12–14 +80% longer window

Customer Feedback

"Switching to Ferro Silicon Barium immediately stabilized our nodularity above 85% and completely eliminated chill defects in thin sections. The longer fading time also allowed our casting team to work without rushing, reducing rejection rates by 60%."
