Introduction to Low Carbon Ferrochrome

 

Low carbon ferrochrome is an iron alloy, mainly composed of chromium (Cr) and iron (Fe), while containing a low content of carbon (C) (usually C ≤ 0.1%). It is an important alloy additive in the metallurgical industry, a key raw material for smelting stainless steel, speciality steel and corrosion resistant alloys, and is particularly suitable for the production of steel that is sensitive to carbon content.

Compared with high carbon ferrochrome, low carbon ferrochrome's can reduce the carbon content in stainless steel, avoid intergranular corrosion and improve corrosion resistance. Chemical composition

  • Chromium (Cr): The content is usually 60%-70%, which is the core alloying element and gives the material anti-oxidation and corrosion resistance.
  • Carbon (C): Strictly controlled at 0.03%-0.15%, significantly lower than high carbon ferrochrome (6%-8%), to avoid embrittlement of steel.
  • Impurity elements: Silicon (Si≤1.5%), phosphorus (P≤0.03%), sulfur (S≤0.03%) and other contents are extremely low to ensure the purity of the alloy.

Physical properties

  • Melting point: about 1550-1600°C, high compatibility with molten steel, easy to smelt.
  • Density: 6.8-7.2 g/cm³, high density helps the alloy sink quickly into the molten steel.
  • Form: mostly in block (10-50mm) or powder, easy to add accurately.

Stainless steel production

Uses:Low carbon ferrochrome is an important alloying additive for the production of stainless steel, especially for the smelting of low carbon stainless steels such as 304, 316, 321, etc.

Function:Improve the corrosion resistance, heat resistance and mechanical properties of steel.Avoid the problem of intergranular corrosion of stainless steel caused by excessive carbon content.

Austenitic stainless steel: Ensure the chromium content of steel is 18-25%, and control the carbon content at a low level.

Ferritic stainless steel: Used for 430, 446 and other series of stainless steels

Duplex stainless steel: Ensure the appropriate chromium/nickel ratio
