Case Study: Improving Castability for a Steel Mill in Türkiye

 

Background

A steel mill in Türkiye was experiencing frequent nozzle clogging during continuous casting of aluminum-killed low-carbon steel. The clogging led to production interruptions, increased refractory consumption, and reduced casting sequence lengths.

Challenge

The primary issue was high-melting-point alumina (Al₂O₃) inclusions that accumulated in the tundish nozzle. The mill's existing practice using aluminum deoxidation alone was insufficient to modify these inclusions into a less harmful form.

Solution
