Product Introduction

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a highly advanced composite material known for its exceptional properties and wide range of applications in industries requiring high-performance and durable materials. By combining silicon (Si) with silicon carbide (SiC), this material gains the best of both elements: the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity of silicon and the superior hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability of silicon carbide. SiSiC is frequently used in applications where high strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature stability are required.

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a ceramic composite material created by bonding silicon with silicon carbide, resulting in a highly durable and heat-resistant material. The synthesis of SiSiC typically involves infiltrating porous silicon carbide with molten silicon. This process improves the material's toughness, thermal conductivity, and resistance to oxidation, making it ideal for use in extreme environments.

Due to its superior properties, SiC is a preferred material in various industrial sectors, including aerospace, automotive, energy, and chemical processing.

Key Features & Benefits

The combination of silicon and silicon carbide in SiSiC produces a material with several outstanding properties that make it indispensable in advanced applications. Below are the key features and benefits:

1

High Hardness and Abrasion Resistance:

Silicon carbide is one of the hardest materials known, and when combined with silicon, SiSiC maintains excellent hardness, which provides outstanding resistance to wear and abrasion. This makes it particularly valuable in industries that require materials that can withstand extreme wear conditions, such as in cutting tools or mechanical components.

Excellent Thermal Stability:

SiSiC can endure extremely high temperatures, making it ideal for use in environments that experience rapid temperature changes or high heat. Its high melting point (around 2,700°C) ensures it can retain its structure and properties even at elevated temperatures, which is vital for applications like heat exchangers, furnace linings, and other high-temperature equipment.

Superior Oxidation Resistance:

One of the standout benefits of SiSiC is its resistance to oxidation. The material maintains its integrity even when exposed to high levels of oxygen at elevated temperatures, which makes it suitable for harsh environments like combustion chambers and high-temperature reactors. This feature significantly enhances the lifespan of SiSiC components.

High Strength and Toughness:

The combination of silicon and silicon carbide imparts a balance of high strength and toughness to the material. SiSiC is not as brittle as pure silicon carbide and is less prone to fracturing under stress. This makes it suitable for structural applications where high strength is needed along with the ability to absorb shocks or resist cracks.

Applications

Silicon Silicon Carbide (SiSiC) is used in a broad range of demanding applications due to its exceptional properties. Some of the most common and advanced applications of SiSiC include:

Aerospace:

SiSiC is widely used in the aerospace industry for components that need to withstand extreme temperatures and mechanical stress, such as turbine blades, heat shields, and nozzles. Its high strength-to-weight ratio and thermal stability make it ideal for aerospace applications, where performance and durability are critical.

Automotive:

In the automotive industry, SiSiC is used in applications such as braking systems, engine components, and heat exchangers. Its resistance to wear and high-temperature stability makes it perfect for critical components that are exposed to extreme conditions. SiSiC is also used in electric vehicle (EV) technology, where its thermal conductivity helps to manage heat in battery systems.

Energy and Power Generation:

SiSiC plays a significant role in power generation, especially in gas turbines, furnace linings, and heat exchangers. Its excellent thermal conductivity and high heat resistance make it an essential material in energy production equipment, ensuring efficient operation and longer service life.

Semiconductors and Electronics:

SiSiC is increasingly being used in the production of semiconductor devices, such as power electronics, due to its superior electrical conductivity and thermal management properties. The material is particularly useful in high-power applications like electric motors, inverters, and transformers.

Chemical Processing:

SiSiC is used in chemical reactors, pipes, and valves due to its resistance to corrosion, high temperatures, and chemical environments. The material's durability allows it to handle the aggressive conditions found in chemical plants, where metals and other materials would degrade.

Industrial Equipment and Tools:

Silicon Silicon Carbide is used in the production of cutting tools, grinding wheels, and wear-resistant parts. Its hardness and resistance to abrasion make it suitable for machining hard materials, grinding, and other manufacturing processes that require durable tooling.

Defense and Military:

SiSiC is also employed in defense and military applications such as armor systems and ballistic shields. Its high strength, toughness, and lightweight nature provide enhanced protection in demanding military scenarios.

Case Study: Advanced Aluminum Smelter in Quebec, Canada

Customer Profile & Initial Challenge:
This producer of high-purity aluminum for the aerospace and electronics industries was battling two problems: 1) High levels of dissolved gases (hydrogen) and non-metallic inclusions in their final product, and 2) The need to reduce the environmental impact and cost of their dross treatment process.

Our Technical Solution & Implementation:
We introduced high-purity Silicon Carbide as an innovative fluxing and treatment agent in their holding and treatment furnaces.

Product Spec: We supplied Micronized High-Purity Silicon Carbide Powder (SiC >99%, d50 = 50 microns). The fine particle size was critical for creating a reactive, fluid flux.

Application Method: The SiC powder was blended with other salt fluxes (e.g., NaCl, KCl) to create a proprietary composite furnace cleaning and degassing flux. This blend was injected or rabbled into the molten aluminum bath.

Mechanism: The SiC particles act as millions of microscopic, stable substrates. They attract and wetted oxide inclusions (Al2O3), facilitating their agglomeration and removal into the dross layer. Simultaneously, the flux mixture created a protective barrier, minimizing further hydrogen pickup from furnace atmosphere moisture.

Measurable Results & Value Delivered:

Product Quality: The cleanliness of the aluminum improved dramatically. Inclusion counts (measured by PoDFA or LiMCA) were reduced by over 40%, and hydrogen content was consistently maintained below 0.12 ml/100g Al. This was crucial for meeting aerospace specification AS9100.

Operational Savings: The dross generated with the SiC-based flux was drier, more mineralized, and contained less entrapped free metal. This increased metal recovery during dross recycling and reduced the volume of salt cake sent for disposal, lowering overall treatment costs by an estimated 15%.

Process Control: The treatment became more predictable, reducing the need for repeated fluxing cycles and associated temperature losses.
