Silicon metal's surface has color of silver gray or dark gray with metallic luster. Owns high melting point, better heat resistance, high resistivity and superior oxidation resistance. Silicon Metal is known as a semi-metallic or metalloid, having several of the characteristics of metals. It is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust after oxygen, naturally occurring in various forms of silicon dioxide or silicates and very rarely in its pure form in volcanic exhalations. It takes its name from the Latin Silicus, which means flint.

On a commercial scale metallurgical silicon metal is produced by the carbothermic reaction of silica (quartz) in an electric arc furnace using carbon electrodes where the temperature in the main reaction zone exceeds 1800°C. Commercially produced metallurgical grade silicon metal is typically Si 99% pure and is notably produced in China, Russia, Brazil, Norway, South Africa and USA.

In the chemical industry, silicon metal serves as the base material for producing silicones, silanes, and silicone rubbers, which are found in sealants, lubricants, medical devices, and coatings. Furthermore, high-purity silicon metal is the starting material for polysilicon, which is then refined into monocrystalline and multicrystalline silicon for solar cells and semiconductor wafers. Additional applications include its use in refractory materials and certain electronic components.
