Silicon carbide (SiC) is produced by high-temperature smelting of quartz sand and petroleum coke in an electric resistance furnace. It is a high-performance compound with extreme hardness, stable chemical properties, and good thermal conductivity. In the metallurgical industry, SiC serves as an efficient and cost-saving deoxidizer and alloying agent.

1. Steelmaking - Deoxidizer & Alloying Agent
SiC reacts with excess oxygen in molten steel to remove impurities, while the unoxidized silicon and carbon dissolve into the steel to increase Si and C content. This improves steel strength and toughness, enables rapid slag formation, and enhances element recovery rates. Studies show SiC can be a cost-effective alternative to FeSi75 with comparable deoxidizing and exothermic effects.
2. Cast Iron Production - Inoculant
In gray iron and ductile iron casting, SiC improves inoculation action, refines graphite distribution in the microstructure, and provides more nucleation sites. It also reduces pinhole porosity and enhances melt fluidity through its exothermic oxidation reaction.
