Products Description

A recarburizer, commonly known as a carbon raiser or GPC (Graphitized Petroleum Coke), is a carbonaceous additive used in foundries and steel mills. Its primary function is to increase the carbon content of molten iron or steel during production. Unlike alloying elements that impart new properties, carbon is a foundational element, defining the core strength, hardness, and castability of the final metal product. High-quality recarburizers offer an efficient and controlled method to achieve precise final carbon specifications, ensuring metallurgical consistency and product reliability.

Types of Recarburizers

Not all recarburizers are created equal. Depending on the raw material and manufacturing process, they differ in carbon purity, sulfur content, and absorption rate. Here are the main types:

Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC)
🚢 Widely used due to availability and affordability. It has moderate carbon content and good absorption efficiency.

Graphitized Petroleum Coke (GPC)
⚡ Produced at high temperatures, this type offers higher purity, low sulfur, and faster absorption.

Calcined Anthracite Coal (CAC)

Known for its hardness and high carbon yield, though its absorption speed is lower.

Synthetic Graphite
🧪 The premium choice. High in fixed carbon (up to 99%) and ideal for critical-grade castings or high-performance steel.

Why Carbon Content Matters

Carbon is a game-changer in metallurgy. It influences:

  • Hardness & Strength 💪
  • Wear Resistance 🔧
  • Machinability 🛠️
  • Castability 🏗️

Too little carbon can lead to brittle or weak products, while too much may result in excess slag or casting defects.

Recarburizers allow producers to fine-tune the carbon levels efficiently, especially after oxidation losses during smelting.

Applications Across Industries

Recarburizers are indispensable across many sectors:

Steelmaking Industry

🏗️ Added in the ladle or converter to restore carbon levels in carbon steel and alloy steels.

Foundry Industry

🔩 Enhances the quality of cast iron products, ensuring better mechanical properties and surface finish.

Ductile Iron Production

🧱 Assists in achieving the ideal carbon equivalent (CE), which is crucial for nodularity and graphite shape.

Automotive & Heavy Machinery

🚗🛠️ Used in manufacturing engine blocks, gears, pumps, and other wear-resistant components.

Case Study: Advanced Aluminum Smelter in Quebec, Canada

Customer Profile & Initial Challenge:
This producer of high-purity aluminum for the aerospace and electronics industries was battling two problems: 1) High levels of dissolved gases (hydrogen) and non-metallic inclusions in their final product, and 2) The need to reduce the environmental impact and cost of their dross treatment process.

Our Technical Solution & Implementation:
We introduced high-purity Silicon Carbide as an innovative fluxing and treatment agent in their holding and treatment furnaces.

Product Spec: We supplied Micronized High-Purity Silicon Carbide Powder (SiC >99%, d50 = 50 microns). The fine particle size was critical for creating a reactive, fluid flux.

Application Method: The SiC powder was blended with other salt fluxes (e.g., NaCl, KCl) to create a proprietary composite furnace cleaning and degassing flux. This blend was injected or rabbled into the molten aluminum bath.

Mechanism: The SiC particles act as millions of microscopic, stable substrates. They attract and wetted oxide inclusions (Al2O3), facilitating their agglomeration and removal into the dross layer. Simultaneously, the flux mixture created a protective barrier, minimizing further hydrogen pickup from furnace atmosphere moisture.

Measurable Results & Value Delivered:

Product Quality: The cleanliness of the aluminum improved dramatically. Inclusion counts (measured by PoDFA or LiMCA) were reduced by over 40%, and hydrogen content was consistently maintained below 0.12 ml/100g Al. This was crucial for meeting aerospace specification AS9100.

Operational Savings: The dross generated with the SiC-based flux was drier, more mineralized, and contained less entrapped free metal. This increased metal recovery during dross recycling and reduced the volume of salt cake sent for disposal, lowering overall treatment costs by an estimated 15%.

Process Control: The treatment became more predictable, reducing the need for repeated fluxing cycles and associated temperature losses.
