Properties:
Silica fume (also known as microsilica or silicon slag, 硅渣) is a byproduct of the production of silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys in electric arc furnaces. It consists of very fine, amorphous (non-crystalline) silica particles, which give it its unique properties:
High Purity Silica: Silica fume typically contains more than 85% silicon dioxide (SiO₂), making it a highly concentrated form of silica.
Fine Particle Size: The particles of silica fume are extremely fine, with an average diameter of about 0.1 microns, much smaller than cement particles. This contributes to its high surface area.
High Surface Area: The fine particle size gives silica fume a large surface area, which enhances its reactivity when mixed with cement and other materials.
Amorphous Nature: Unlike crystalline silica, the amorphous nature of silica fume makes it more reactive, enabling it to participate in pozzolanic reactions (chemical reactions with calcium hydroxide to form additional calcium silicate hydrate, which improves the material's strength).
