Description of Nitrided Ferro Manganese

Nitrided ferro manganese is an indispensable alloying agent for the production of special alloy steel, stainless steel, and heat-resistant steel. It is usually obtained by nitriding medium to low-carbon ferro manganese.

Nitrided ferro manganese is primarily used as a nitrogen additive in steel refining, enhancing the steel's strength and other mechanical properties, refining grain size, and stabilizing austenite.

Features of Nitrided Ferro Manganese

• Nitrided ferro manganese has a high elemental content, low harmful impurities such as phosphorus, a high nitrogen utilization rate after melting, and requires a small amount of addition.

• Nitrogen can improve the strength and plasticity of steel, expand the austenite region, refine grain size, and improve processing performance.

• Manganese nitride can partially replace nickel, thereby reducing costs.

Applications of Nitrided Ferro Manganese

Nitrided ferro manganese exhibits excellent magnetic properties and can be used in the manufacturing of motors, generators, transformers, and other electrical equipment. Due to its high magnetic permeability and low magnetic loss, nitrided ferro manganese alloy materials have high performance and stable magnetic properties, widely used in power systems and electronic devices to effectively improve equipment efficiency and performance.

Additionally, nitrided ferro manganese possesses outstanding mechanical properties, including high strength, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it can be used to manufacture various critical components, machinery, and structural parts, enhancing product lifespan and safety.

Nitrided ferro manganese alloy materials also have good heat treatment performance, allowing for the adjustment of alloy composition and heat treatment processes to obtain materials with different properties, meeting diverse industry requirements. Due to its excellent performance and versatile application characteristics, nitrided ferro manganese alloy materials have become an essential material in modern manufacturing.

In summary, nitrided ferro manganese is an alloy material with excellent magnetic and high-strength properties, widely applied in electrical engineering, electronic devices, aerospace, manufacturing, and metallurgy. Its exceptional performance and diverse application characteristics make it a crucial modern engineering material, contributing significantly to various industries.

Preparation Methods of Nitrided Ferro Manganese

There are two methods for producing nitrided ferro manganese:

Liquid Nitridation Method: Nitrogen is introduced into liquid medium to low-carbon manganese iron in a closed container, saturating the alloy with gaseous or solid nitrogen components. The resulting nitrided ferro manganese has advantages such as high density, high strength, and high nitrogen utilization rate during steel refining. However, it often fails to meet steel refining requirements due to lower nitrogen content.

Solid Nitridation Method: In a closed container, solid medium to low-carbon manganese iron powder is heated, and nitrogen is thoroughly introduced to nitridize the powder. The solid powder of medium to low-carbon manganese iron reacts with nitrogen released from nitrogen or ammonia gas, forming a series of nitrogen-containing compounds. The stability of these nitrides decreases with increasing temperature until decomposition. Therefore, this method requires appropriate nitriding temperatures. In some cases, manganese iron powder with a particle size below 60 mesh is nitrided in a closed container with nitrogen at temperatures between 650°C and 1120°C for 4-8 hours, resulting in nitrided ferro manganese containing 4-6% nitrogen. The nitrogen content increases with manganese content but decreases with carbonized manganese content, with high-manganese low-carbon manganese iron having slightly higher nitrogen content than low-manganese medium-carbon manganese iron. The obtained iron product has low density, and melting it increases density but significantly reduces nitrogen content. Approximately 1 ton of nitrided ferro manganese requires 1 ton of medium to low-carbon manganese iron and 1500 kWh of electricity.

Case Study

Background

A leading specialty steel mill in Southeast Asia faced increasing demand for high‑strength, wear‑resistant steel plates used in mining and heavy machinery. The mill's conventional practice of adding nitrogen through expensive nitriding powders or direct nitrogen gas injection was inconsistent, leading to low nitrogen recovery (≤45%) and frequent rejections due to uneven hardness and poor impact toughness.

The technical team sought a stable, cost‑efficient nitrogen carrier that could integrate seamlessly into ladle metallurgy.

Solution Implemented

The mill introduced Nitrided Ferro Manganese (FeMnN) – a high‑nitrogen ferro alloy with typical composition: Mn 70–80%, N 4–8%, C ≤0.5%, Si ≤1.5%. Key adoption steps:

Ladle addition at 1580–1620°C, replacing 30% of conventional high‑carbon ferro manganese

Controlled stirring for uniform nitrogen dissolution

Optimized slag chemistry to minimize nitrogen escape

Results After 3 Months

Parameter Before (Conventional) After (FeMnN)
Nitrogen recovery 42–48% 88–92%
Nitrogen content consistency ±0.020% ±0.005%
Tensile strength (YP 0.2%) 580 MPa 645 MPa
Charpy impact (−40°C) 28 J 42 J
Production cost per ton $124 $101

Quantified Benefits

18.7% reduction in nitrogen alloying cost

Zero rejection over 200 heats due to nitrogen‑related inclusions

Higher wear resistance – end‑user field tests showed 23% longer service life of excavator buckets

Simpler logistics – one alloy replaced two separate raw materials (nitriding agent + Mn source)

Customer Feedback

"Nitrided Ferro Manganese gave us the stability we never achieved with gas injection. The nitrogen dissolution is predictable, and our metallurgists now spend less time adjusting chemistry and more time optimizing rolling schedules."
- Senior Process Engineer, Southeast Asian steel mill

Conclusion

Nitrided Ferro Manganese is a proven, high‑performance nitrogen carrier for microalloyed and wear‑resistant steels. It delivers superior recovery, tighter composition control, and lower total metallurgical cost – ideal for producers upgrading to advanced high‑strength steel grades.
