Silicon Metal 97 typically contains a minimum of 97% silicon, with controlled impurity levels including iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), and calcium (Ca). Common specifications include iron content ranging from 1.2% to 1.5% and calcium content below 0.3%, though custom compositions are available based on specific customer requirements.

The material is produced through carbothermal reduction of high-purity quartz in submerged arc furnaces at temperatures exceeding 1900°C. After smelting, the molten silicon is cast, cooled, and processed into various particle sizes to meet downstream processing needs.

Aluminum Alloy Production

Silicon Metal 97 serves as a key alloying element in both cast and wrought aluminum alloys. In casting alloys, silicon content typically ranges from 6.5% to 13%, improving fluidity, high-temperature performance, and wear resistance while reducing shrinkage and hot cracking tendencies. In wrought aluminum alloys, silicon is introduced indirectly through aluminum-silicon master alloys for grain refinement and strengthening purposes.

Secondary Applications

The material also finds use in steel deoxidation and other metallurgical inputs where controlled silicon addition is required. Its relatively high silicon content and consistent quality make it suitable for continuous alloy production processes.

Silicon Metal 97 is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to higher-purity grades such as 553 or 441. While higher-grade silicon offers lower impurity levels, 97-grade material provides reliable performance for applications where stringent boron or phosphorus control is not critical.
