Silicon slag is an industrial by-product generated during the smelting of metallic silicon and ferrosilicon. It appears as greyish-black metallic lumps, consisting primarily of elemental silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂), with a silicon content typically ranging from 30 per cent to 70 per cent, whilst also containing small amounts of aluminium, iron, carbon, sulphur, phosphorus and other elements.

 

Although silicon slag is classified as smelting waste, its silicon content is substantial and its price is significantly lower than that of pure silicon and ferrosilicon; consequently, it offers considerable value and economic benefits for recycling and reuse. Currently, silicon slag is widely utilised across numerous industrial sectors.
